The Problem
We expect young people to become adults, but rarely define what must be transferred to them or how that transfer should happen.
I began this work because I could not find a clear answer to a simple question: what are we actually trying to transfer to a young person before they become responsible for their own life?
The Triple Transfer Framework
Preparing a young person for adulthood requires the gradual transfer of:
- Competence: Can they do it?
- Agency: Are they increasingly authorised to decide and act?
- Accountability: Do they increasingly carry the consequences?
The Broader Vision
The Apprentice Adult is not a collection of prescribed answers. It is a collection of thinking tools for navigating adulthood.
Its thinking tools are intended for young people, families, schools and universities.
The Apprentice Adult is being developed by Mariacristina Saraceno, a writer and educator with a background in applied neuroscience and many years of experience working with young people and families.
